Season of the Nine-Colored Deer marked Sky’s 3rd major IP collaboration, this time with Shanghai Film Studio’s animated rendition of the age-old tale of the Deer of Nine Colors. I joined this project late and was tasked with the challenge of clarifying the narrative to help it better fit our game/gameplay/quest structure, and then accordingly redesign and reimplement the season’s quests.
This season’s final quest is regarded by many players as their favorite of all in Sky!
I worked with a small but exceptionally talented and close-knit team, as well as our partners in China, to help shape the player’s experience with the Nine-Colored Deer. This was an urgent project with fairly high stakes - not only preserving Sky’s universe but uplifting an existing, beloved cultural landmark.
My responsibilities this season included:
Redesign and development of the Season’s gameplay, cinematics, interactions, and experience
Collaborate with Chinese partners to preserve and highlight important culture and context
Shape an emotional interactive experience that honors both the source material and our own universe
